Literacy Strategy

Developing Literacy across the curriculum

The intent for our literacy strategy at Trinity High School is that all students leave the school confident in their literacy ability, able to comprehend complex academic texts across all disciplines and write maturely, cohesively and accurately.

Literacy Research has shown that reading helps cognitive development; a recent study revealed that students who read regularly do “significantly better” across the curriculum – including 9.9% better in Maths – than students who don’t read.

Linked to this is the fact that reading is the best way to improve vocabulary, essential for success in every subject. If we want students to ‘think hard’ and we must equip them with the literacy skills to do this. Therefore, disciplinary literacy and reading for pleasure are two key foci of our Teaching and Learning framework.

In 2026 and moving forward our literacy strategy will develop as one of our school development priorities. In addition to READING SCHOOL Trinity Reading School – Trinity High School & Sixth Form Centre, our CPD programme will focus on the following areas of whole school literacy development;

  • Building and sustaining a culture of reading including reading for pleasure
    • Active and Responsive reading
    • Pre-reading Instruction for complex texts
    • Disciplinary Literacy including key vocabulary across all subject areas
    • Oracy including purposeful paired work and guided working in small teams

Literacy is now one of the interwoven strands in our Trinity Teaching Framework due to the correlation between academic attainment and progress and literacy skills.
