Portsmouth History Trip

Just before half-term our Year 13 historians embarked on a two-day trip to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, and Explosion! The Museum of Naval Firepower. The trip complimented our Year 13 studies on Britain’s historical wars, and the students’ cultural capital by helping them to understand the significance of the Royal Navy in Britain’s history and cultural heritage.

Day one gave the opportunity for our historians to explore HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, and HMS M33 to see first-hand how British sailors live, worked, and fought on board ship. A visit to the Nelson Galleries followed where students could investigate why Admiral Nelson was regarded by his men and peers as an excellent leader and is such a significant figure in Britain’s cultural history. The evening consisted of some outstanding ten-pin bowling performances at Hollywood Bowl. Despite some very competitive bowling, much fun was had by all.

Day two involved a visit to Explosion! The Museum of Naval Firepower where the students could explore and investigate how naval weaponry has developed, from the cannons of the Napoleonic Wars to modern missiles and naval guns. Mr Coyle was also able to give a final salute to a now decommissioned ship he once called home. Our students represented the school brilliantly, as always. Many had never visited a “sea city” or viewed a large ship up close. We hope that this visit has given them some memories they can look back on fondly in the future.
