3D Designers visit the School of Jewellery

Last week 3D Design students had the opportunity to visit and explore Birmingham City’s School of Jewellery, in the jewellery quarter, which has recently been awarded World Craft City status.
Students engaged in an in-depth tour of the school, its courses and history. Lead by Course Director Rebecca Skeels, we took a detailed look at the skills and techniques taught within the school, which included jewellery making, horology and gemmology. Students spoke to current academics highlighting the range of traditional and more modern approaches to design.
During the afternoon students entered the gemmology lab, located in Birmingham City Assay office. Students spent time with Senior Lecturer Michelle McCornack and were shown how engineering and science play a huge role in jewellery design. They also studied precious and non-precious stones, examining sapphires, rubies, peridot and quartz.
